A lonely, tortured man, Faran is the mysterious stranger who is friends to many of the Lords of Avalon. No one knows anything about him. He never speaks of his past and he has an uncanny knack for knowing the future. He has the bearing of a prince, but he claims that he owns nothing in the world. The only clue about his past is a small woman's ring that he wears on a chain around his neck. But no one knows who the woman is or was, and no one is brave enough to ask.

The one thing that is undisputed is the fact that he is one of the best swordsmen and archers ever born. His only companion is a mute werehawk who was cursed by a sorcerer. He has a dry sense of humor and is ever fond of speaking in riddles.
